The style of writing is very important to this work. It could be put into simpler terms and be more easily understandable, but in doing so, it would lose the peotry and descriptiveness. In being forced to deeply read the book to even just understand it (as opposed to just skimming through it), one can more greatly appretiate the plot and characters.

For example? That is: in what way(s) does the writing style highlight the plot and/or characters?

To me, the writing style gives of an older flair, making it easier for one to believe that this happened century's ago. It also reminds me of The Iliad, in terms of how it flows. In regards to poetic feel, it doesn't disappoint, as this is too an epic poem.
